1 Coat each of three ring gear teeth offset by 180° with Prussian blue.
2 Turn drive pinion forwards and backwards and simultaneously brake the ring gear with a piece of hard wood in the process.
A model for the contact pattern becomes apparent on the ring gear teeth.
3 Determine contact pattern.
By comparison with the following examples of contact patterns shown.
W33.30-0020-01
Ideal contact pattern
An ideal contact pattern is rarely obtained in practice. It is, however, important to ensure that the contact pattern on the tooth face does not extend to the outside edge of the tooth at any point.
W33.30-0021-01
Contact pattern at base of tooth flank
Cause:
Installed dimension of drive pinion is too small.
Contact pattern at crown of tooth flank
Cause:
Installed dimension of drive pinion too large.

Contact pattern at tooth heel
Cause:
Adjustment of gear backlash too large.
