Removing

Take off wheels of rear axle

Unscrew brake caliper (5) with brake caliper support

 Use welding wire to tie brake caliper (5) onto wheel well.

Remove rear-axle shaft (12)

Push back brake shoes of parking brake at adjusting wheel (14) (arrow)

Take off wheel hub (6)

Pull ABS sensor ring (1) / oil retainer (1.1), sealing ring (2), and wheel bearing (3) out of wheel hub.

 Place small wooden blocks under the support arms of the puller  for height compensation.



Install

Inspect thrust ring, replace if necessary

 Do not confuse the thrust rings for the right and left sides because they feature an oil slinger which directs the oil back over the lip of the shaft seal. Leakages would be certain to occur if incorrectly installed.

To prevent confusion, the thrust ring for the right side is color coded in the chamfer.

Insert wheel bearing (3)

 Thoroughly grease wheel bearing (3) beforehand.

Coat outer circumference of new seal (2) with sealant and drive into place

Check sealing surface of wheel hub for damage and reface if necessary.

 Do not coat sealing rings with partially rubber-coated sealing surfaces with sealant.

 Drive sealing ring internally into wheel hub, flush to max. 3 mm.



Insert ABS sensor ring (1) / oil retainer (1.1)

 Coat contact surface with sealant and drive into place up to stop using plastic hammer.

Fit on wheel hub (6)

 Thoroughly grease wheel bearing (7) prior to installation.
