Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform.

Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

Remove

Remove each front wheel.

Loosen screw (2).

 Operate service brake here.
A helper is required.

Remove lower engine compartment lining.

If installed.

Remove torsion bar linkage from stabilizer bar.

Remove ball head of tie rod from steering knuckle.

Remove supporting joint from steering knuckle.

Open clamp of guide bearing of front axle shaft (1).

If the right front axle shaft (1) is removed.

 Remove screw (3) to do this.

Remove screw/bolt (2).

 Dispose of screw (2).

Remove front axle shaft (1).

 To do so, swivel steering knuckle to one side and guide front axle shaft (1) out of transmission.

 Catch oil running out.

Check

Check boots of front axle shaft (1).

 Visual inspection only.

If corresponding findings are present,



Replace respective boot.

Check radial shaft sealing ring on transmission flange.

 Visual inspection only.

If corresponding findings are present,



Replace radial shaft sealing ring.

Install

Install assembly aid (4), as shown, at transmission flange.

Use assembly aid (4).
This prevents damage occurring when installing the front axle shaft (1) at the radial shaft sealing ring.

 The assembly aid (4) is to be ordered via EPC. When replacing the radial shaft sealing rings, they are also included in the parts kit.

Install front axle shaft (1).


The spur toothing of the front axle shaft (1) must engage with the teeth on the wheel bearing.
This prevents damage to the front axle shaft (1) or the wheel bearing.

 Installation: For this, turn spur toothing of front axle shaft (1) in opposite direction relative to toothing on wheel bearing until they positively mesh.

To do so, position front axle shaft (1) on transmission flange and push in as far as end stop; then position on wheel bearing.

For this, position front axle shaft (1) via assembly aid (4) on transmission flange and push in, as shown, until the serrations engage into the differential. Then remove assembly aid (4), push front axle shaft (1) in up to end stop and position on wheel bearing.

Screw in new screw (2) lightly by hand.

 Do not tighten the screw (2) yet.

Install clamp of guide bearing of front axle shaft (1).

If the right front axle shaft (1) has been removed.

 Screw in screw/bolt (3) to do this.
