Remove/install

Detach ground line from battery

Remove engine cover

 Installation: Ensure correct seating.

Remove covers (1)

Remove both engine air intake ducts upstream of air filter

Remove engine compartment paneling

Open connector for the charge air hose (2)

Detach charge air line (3) on charge air cooler (4) and remove together with charge air hose (2)

 Installation: Replace seal.

 Bolt, charge air line to charge air cooler

Unfasten washer fluid reservoir from headlamp and front module

For vehicles except code M005(4MATIC)

Remove radiator shutters actuator at right fan unit

For vehicles with code M005 (4MATIC)

 Installation: Ensure that the lever of the actuator on the ball head of the radiator shutters engages correctly.

Remove engine charge air duct downstream of charge air cooler (4)

Detach charge air cooler (4) and place with attached coolant lines to one side

Slacken poly-V belt and partially remove

 Only remove poly-V belt from belt pulley on alternator (G2).

Detach contact protection on circuit 30 electrical line (5)

Detach electrical line circuit 30 (5)

 Nut, circuit B+ to alternator

Unclip electrical line to alternator (G2)

Detach electrical connector for circuit 61 (6)

Remove screw/bolts (7)

 Screw/bolt, alternator to timing case cover

Take out alternator (G2)

Install in the reverse order

 Danger !

Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running.

Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
