Valve seat turning kit

Preparation

1 Introduce fitting pilot (2) from valve seat turning kit into valve guide (1) until clamping pliers (3) stop (arrow) lies on valve guide (1).

Push down clamping pliers (3) using a screwdriver if necessary.

2 Introduce turning pin from valve seat turning kit into pilot (2) bores and tighten down.

3 Attach turning head (4) to turning device (5) and loosely screw in both bolts (6).

Use suitable turning head (4):

Intake valve turning head D2/30°

Exhaust valve turning head D2/45°

4 Set up turning head (4) in such a way that the distance between the tooth side, gear rack and opposing side is about 0.5 to 0.8 mm. Then tighten both bolts (6).

It must be possible to easily move the tool slide (8) back and forward with the quick-adjuster (9).

5 Attach cutting tool (7) tight to turning head (4).

6 Moisten pilot (2) with oil.

7 Insert turning tool (5) over pilot (2) until the stop pin (10) is resting on the pilot (2) or the lathe (7) on cylinder head.

The cutting tool (7) must not strike the cylinder head, otherwise the carbide tip will be damaged.

8 Turn quick-adjuster (9) until turning tool (7) is above center of valve seat ring (11).

9 Hold chisel (5) tight, loosen the clamping screw (12) of stop pin (10), carefully lower the turning tool (5) until the tip of chisel (7) is resting on the center of the valve seat ring (11).

Press stop pin (10) against the pilot (2) and hold pressed then tighten clamp screw (12).

10 Clamp guide (13) horizontally, approximately at the center of the guide, with the steadyrest clamp (14).

It must now just be as easy to rotate the turning device (5) as before.

11 Make three colored markings (arrows) on valve seat ring (11), offset about 120°, with a marker pen.

12 Raise turning tool (5) and position the chisel (7) next to the inner valve seat edge by turning the quick-adjuster (9).

Do not set any feed.

13 Firmly hold feed rate knurled disk (15), and turn hand crank (16) clockwise. This generally produces an irregular chip removal rate.

14 After fully turning, move turning tool (7) back beside inner valve seat edge with quick-adjuster (9).

Machine valve seat face

15 Loosen the locking screw (17) and turn the knurled disk (18) about a 1/2 to 1 graduation line (arrow) anti-clockwise. Then tighten locking bolt (17).

1 graduation line = 0.1 mm feed

16 Firmly hold the feed rate knurled disk (15), and turn hand crank (16) clockwise.

Here the valve seat is machined outwards using the tip of the turning tool (7).

Machining must be performed as often as necessary (steps 15 and 16) until valve seat is smooth and free of chatter marks and the valve seat width (F) and diameter of valve seat face (G) is achieved (see table Check values).

F Valve seat width on valve seat ring

G Diameter of valve seat face on valve seat ring based on machining dimension (H)

H Machining dimension (test dimension based on diameter of valve seat face (G))

Correct valve seat ring outside

17 Raise turning tool (5) and loosen clamping screw (12) on stop pin (10).

18 Turn quick adjuster (9) until turning tool (7) is resting on outer valve seat edge.

Place turning tool (7) carefully at edge of valve seat face.

19 Press stop pin (10) against the pilot (2) and hold pressed then tighten clamp screw (12).

20 Loosen locking screw (17) and turn knurled disk (18) about one 1/2 graduation line (arrow) anti-clockwise. Then tighten locking bolt (17) again.

21 Hold the crank arms with both hands and rotate turning tool (5) gradually downwards around the pilot (2) by applying slight pressure.

22 Repeat operation steps 20 and 21 until required valve seat width (F) specified in the table Check values is achieved.

Crank again after achieving required valve seat width (F) without a turning tool (5) feed rate.

23 Remove turning device (5).

Do not remove pilot (2).
