Measure protrusion between piston crown (3) and cylinder head contact surface (4) without the cylinder head gasket fitted.
The measurement must be carried out in the direction of the piston pin in order to eliminate the piston rock.
1 Rotate crankshaft until the piston to be measured is positioned at TDC.
2 Place dial indicator holder (1) to crankcase. Insert dial indicator (2) in such a way that the tracer pin touches the cylinder crankcase and the dial indicator stands under tension. Set scale of dial gage to "0".
3 Turn dial indicator holder (1) from the contact surface for the cylinder crankcase (4) over the cylinder bore.
Pull back tracer pin on dial indicator (2) when moving.
4 The tracer pin of dial indicator (2) is pressed back by the piston crown (arrow); the measurement read off gives the piston projection.
