1 Clean connecting rod journals.
2 Measure outside diameter (D) of connecting rod journal.
at two points (vertically and at an angle of approx. 90°) and note both measurements.
Outside micrometer
3 Calculate the mean value (actual value) for the outside diameter (D) of the connecting rod journal based on both measurements and compare with the specified value.
The actual value must lie within the permissible tolerance range of the specified value while taking account of the current deviation.

4 Clean connecting rod bearing cap (2), connecting rod bearing shell (3) and connecting rod.
5 Insert connecting rod bearing shell (3) in the connecting rod and connecting rod bearing cap (2).
Markings on the connecting rod bearing shell (3) and the codes on the connecting rod and connecting rod bearing cap (2) must be observed.
The connecting rod and connecting rod bearing caps (2) have different bearing shells (3). The short parts numbers on the rear of the connecting rod bearing shells halves must be observed. If the connecting rod bearings are replaced the connecting rod bearing shells (3) of the corresponding installation stage are to be installed and the measured diameter of the connecting rod journal observed. The locking lugs (arrows) of the connecting rod bearing shells (3) must be located in the grooves of the basic bore of the connecting rod bearing cap (2) and the connecting rod
6 Fit connecting rod bearing cap (2) snugly onto connecting rod.
The code numbers on the connecting rod and on the connecting rod bearing cap (2) must match and be positioned on the same side. The broken separating surface must not get damaged.
7 Clamp connecting rod in the vise.
Use soft protective jaws made out of aluminum otherwise the connecting rod can get damaged.
Clamp connecting rod directly below the connecting rod bearing in the vise.
8 Lightly lubricate both connecting rod bolts (4) at their thread and contact surface on screw head.
9 Screw both connecting rod bolt (4) into the connecting rod
.
Press connecting rod bearing cap (2) onto the connecting rod by screwing in both connecting rod bolts (4) by hand.

10 Measure inside diameter (A, B, C) of the connecting rod bearing at three locations offset by about 60°and note the measurements.
Quick calipers for internal measurements
11 Check whether one or three measurements are outside the permissible tolerance range of the specified value for the inside diameter of the connecting rod bearing while taking account of the current deviation.
If one or three measurements lie outside the permissible tolerance range do not use the connecting rod bearing shell anymore. Connecting rod bearing shells are factory-supplied ready for installation. No reworking is permissible.
12 Remove connecting rod bearing cap (2) from connecting rod.
